ACE EPIC BLM UT: Recreation Administration Intern

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the Bureau of land management's, Price field office in Utah is seeking One Recreation Permit Processing/Recreation Administration Intern with an environmental/public outreach background to dedicate 21-25 weeks to supporting the mission of the BLM; "...to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations."
This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a background in outdoor recreation, ecology, conservation, natural resource management, or a closely related field, with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in the public sector outdoor recreation profession, as well as working in one of the most spectacular landscapes in the nation.
Start Date: June 2018 (Start date is flexible for the right candidate)
End Date: Oct/Nov 2018
A 21-25 week commitment is required
Location: The Bureau of Land Management, Price Field Office is located two hours south of Salt Lake City. The BLM PFO administers approximately 2.5 million acres located in Carbon and Emery Counties. The PFO resource area covers a dramatic range of climates and ecosystems, from alpine forests to the twisted slot canyons of the San Rafael. This is multiple use office, activities include: recreation, oil and gas development, grazing, coal, Wilderness management, and the management of world renowned archaeological resources. Archaeological resources in this area span millennia's. Most notable is the Fremont, a mysterious culture group that is distinctly different from the people of the south or the north. Popular site types include prehistoric petroglyph and pictograph sites, habitations features, lithic scatters and traditional landscapes.

Compensation: Interns will work 40 hours per week and receive a $150/wk. Living Stipend, paid bi-weekly, for food and incidentals. Housing will be provided by ACE in Price, UT. Housing is shared with other ACE interns serving in Price and surrounding BLM areas. More details will be provided in the interview process.
AmeriCorps: This internship position may eligible for an AmeriCorps Education award upon successful completion of internship service hours. This education award can be used for student loans and current and future education. Additional enrollment is required for AmeriCorps participation after intern is hired for the position
PLC Competitive Hiring Authority: This position is authorized by the Public Land Corps (PLC) Act of 1993 and expanded by the Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2013. Interns who meet basic requirements during their term of service may be eligible to receive their Noncompetitive Hiring Eligibility Certificate to be used when applying to future federal jobs. Requirements are: (1) Intern must be between the ages of 18 to 30 and (2) Intern must complete at least 640 hours on a federally approved PLC Project. More information can be provided upon request.
Position Description: This work primarily consists of processing permit paperwork, filing forms, drafting correspondence, and filling out spread sheets related to recreation permits. All this work will be performed under the direction and support of recreation staff. This work requires the intern to spend most days in the office, working closely with other BLM staff. There are also plenty of opportunities for field work. Activities that occur under the recreation permits need to be monitored in the field. It's reasonable to expect this position, although primarily an office position, would have the opportunity to be in the field at least 1-2 days every two weeks.
In addition to administrative functions, interns will perform some general field monitoring of recreation activity and monitoring of Wilderness Study Areas. This work may require some occasional hiking and consists of taking pictures, writing notes, and filling out monitoring forms.
It's likely that this intern would also have the opportunity to work with the two maintenance interns on occasion to complete field projects that may require more people to accomplish. A friendly disposition, good communication skills, organization skills, and knowledge of basic computer and word processing programs would be good to have.
Positions are located in Price, Utah, a community of approximately 10,000 in eastern Utah. Price is roughly 60 miles south of Provo, Utah. Although somewhat rural, Price offers more than basic necessities such as multiple shopping stores, grocery stores, churches, fuel stations, hotels, movie theaters, bowling alleys, a hospital, and is home to USU Eastern, an extended campus of USU.
Personal Vehicle is highly suggested. It is possible to get around Price without a car, but extremes in weather may make pedestrian or bike transport difficult.
Qualifications: Applicants with knowledge and skills in recreation management, natural resource management and the natural sciences. Most importantly, candidates should have demonstrated interest in pursuing a career within the scope of this internship. Applicants must be interested in working alongside the BLM and should demonstrate a passion for management of our public lands. The ACE intern must be willing to represent ACE and the BLM in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Required Skills:
US Citizen or Permanent Resident;
Between the age of 18 and 35;
A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide such documentation; Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles);
Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check;
Demonstrated experience using digital tools and databases (excel, word, etc.)
Attention to detail and comfortable in an office environment;
Basic knowledge of natural resources and public lands management;
Solid communication skills and comfortable engaging with the public;
Experience in office settings with professional demeanor;
Comfortable in hot climates;
Knowledge and experience using GPS/GIS software;
Some maintenance/hand tool experience a plus as this intern will have the opportunity to get into the field with the recreation facilities maintenance interns;
4WD experience a plus (please ensure this is demonstrated in your cover letter/resume);
Comfortable in remote settings when out in the field.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
